MetroCard Magic
I was getting off the subway the other morning at 33rd street when I saw a woman in her late twenties approach. Armed with her white, single-ride MetroCard, she eyed the train that was still waiting in the station. She had the time, but did she have “it” — that MetroCard magic? Her quick swipe was greeted with a thud. “Oh no,” she said, wilting, her face crinkling...

Getting My "Motor" Back
I’ve been watching a whole lot of Battlestar Galactica and I’d just like to pause and say..what a cool show! However, watching 19 episodes in 12 days does not contribute (at least doesn’t directly contribute) to my getting my motor back. (speaking of getting nothing done because of BG, check out Portlandia on this topic: http://youtu.be/yYjLrJRuMnY)
If you watch a little...
Talking With My Wife
My wife left behind piles of notes: notes to herself, written in an illegible scrawl. Lynn was a writer and these notes pertain mostly to an unfinished memoir she was working on. I didn’t expect this, but looking over the notes, I find myself feeling that there is a possibility of discovery - almost like having new conversations with her. I see my name or my daughter’s name on a page,...

..looking back and looking ahead
As many of you know I lost my wife this past November. She died after a rough year of cancer treatments due to a recurrence of breast cancer. I started my mourning the day she died by heaving a huge breath, a sigh of relief, Lynn’s struggle was over. It’s not easy for a 54 year old person to die no matter how sick they are — dying is tough work and watching it happen can be...

Warren Buffet & Michael Moore
There’s a convergence in Warren Buffet’s recent remarks about taxing the ultra-rich, and Michael Moore’s speech of March 11, “America is Not Broke!” Both talk about America’s overall wealth (substantial), both talk about the rich getting richer, and both argue for some sharing of the recovery burden.

Q: Hi Erik. Whati is your favourite hate song?
On 04/30/2011 16:47pm YOU answered: A: I’m just rediscovering my Stax-Volt: The Complete Soul Singles 1968-71 and there’s a great one there: JJ Barnes “Got To Get Rid of You” ‘can somebody please tell, why did i have to fall in love, oh my life has been so blue, baby got to get rid of you, before i lose my mind’ ..written by Barnes in 1969, inspired by...
Q: Can you talk a bit about what Oscar Pettiford's...
On 04/30/2011 14:31pm YOU answered: A: It’s hard NOT to talk about Pettiford if you play the cello in an improvised setting. He was a first-class composer and player, and one of the first to center a band around the cello and really make use of its soulful sound..and then he could swing his ass off too. The story, perhaps exaggerated, was Pettiford broke his arm playing softball with...

On 04/30/2011 14:00pm YOU answered: A: Hey Giancarlo, Thanks so much for checking in. I spent a fantastic day in Madrid on the way home from La Coruna..what a great city! I rode the Metro in from a hotel out by the airport and just walked and ate for hours..unfortunately, there are no plans for a Spain trip this coming year. 2012 perhaps..I’ll be coming to Europe with my new Bonebridge...
Q: Hi Erik. What is your favorite love song?
On 04/30/2011 10:22am Anonymous asked: Q: Hi Erik. What is your favorite love song? On 04/30/2011 13:57pm YOU answered: A: This is a tough one just because I’m a sucker for Pop ballads like Shania Twain’s “You’re Still The One” and I would say “Our Song” by Taylor Swift is a sort of love song…but I’ll put my vote, at least for today,...

On 04/30/2011 08:40am [name/address removed] asked: Q: What music cds are you listening lately and you recomend? On 04/30/2011 13:29pm YOU answered: A: I recently had my whole CD collection put on a hard drive so I’ve been in perpetual ‘shuffle mode’ with iTunes getting reacquainted with what I’ve purchased - it’s been fantastic! But there’s been a...

Return to "Block Ice"
Studio360 has rebroadcast a segment from a show they called “On The Road” featuring stores inspired by Kerouac. You can hear the segment: http://bit.ly/hUogzqand here is the intro to my live show “Taking Trips To America” “When I was a kid, summers meant long months on the road. My father is a photographer and those long summer days, with all that light, meant a...

What to charge?
A friend wrote me to as some advice regarding what to charge for a small documentary film. I originally thought I’d post what I wrote but instead I’m reprinting a much clearer (better!) blog posting from Composers Forum by Chris Alpiar

Hide & Seek - New Single is Out! →
Hide & Seek is a gorgeous vocal track (with vocoded harmonies) originally done by Imogen Heap on the record Speak for Yourself (2005). It just hit me one day - this would sound amazing as an all-cello version. So, I gave it shot. Buy Hide & Seek!

Other People's Clothes
Working on this cover project is like discovering a trunk full of exquisite vintage clothing and trying on one beautiful jacket or outfit after another to see what fits, what doesn’t, what works and what makes you look a fool (will that short stewardess costume from Britney Spear’s Toxic look good on me? I’m thinking “yes!”) It’s like a Project Runway episode, “Make it work” The trick is to...

Jack Lord, I Miss You
Eying the publicity for the new Hawaii Five-0 made me cringe. Who was this intern squeaking out, “Book-em Danno”? There must be some mistake! This is McGarrett? A nice guy—friendly, handsome, good boy-friend material (like Paul Rudd in Clueless)—but not McGarrett.
Clearly the producers of the show have done research that leads them to this new McGarrett and so I am...
