A: I’m just rediscovering my Stax-Volt: The Complete Soul Singles 1968-71 and there’s a great one there: JJ Barnes “Got To Get Rid of You”
‘can somebody please tell, why did i have to fall in love, oh my life has been so blue, baby got to get rid of you, before i lose my mind’
..written by Barnes in 1969, inspired by impending separation. The track has full blown Porter/Hayes production with super sweet strings, background vocals, horns—like a r&b romance song but all the words are pointed in the other direction.
Of course there’s “Head Like a Hole” - Nine Inch Nails, Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain” and then Cee Lo Green..
